Pritzker Prize winners \u00c1lvaro Siza Vieira<\/a> and Eduardo <\/a>Souto de Moura<\/a> have teamed up to renovate a museum at a historic Portuguese monastery and have also added a new contemporary sculpture museum (+ slideshow).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two Portuguese architects \u2013\u00a0whose previous collaborations include the 2009 Serpentine Gal<\/a>lery Pavilion<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 partnered on the overhaul of the\u00a0Municipal Museum Abade Pedrosa, which occupies a\u00a0former guesthouse at\u00a0the Monastery of S\u00e3o Bento in\u00a0Santo Tirso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also designed a new wing to branch out from one side, which houses the International Contemporary Sculpture Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monastery dates back to the 8th century, but much of the current architecture was built in the 17th century and the guesthouse underwent a conversion in the mid-19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To respect this potted history, Siza and Souto de Moura chose to keep their additions as simple as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their extension, which has one storey above ground and one below, is a long slender building with a white-rendered facade and a flat roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old and new buildings converge to create a shared entrance beside an ornamental pediment wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe connection between the two buildings is punctual and although functionally connects both, it allows to keep them independent in form and language,\u201d explained the design team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe aim is to access both museums by a common entrance, through the new building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both buildings feature a clay tiled roof, a traditional feature in Portuguese architecture, and they match one another in height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one is covered with decorative windows, while the other is largely windowless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recess in the corner of the new building creates a sheltered entranceway, leading into a shared atrium and gift shop for the two museums. In this way, visitors are encouraged to visit both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the atrium, the rooms of both buildings are arranged in linear sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The municipal museum is entirely housed on the upper level of the former guesthouse, and includes a 56-seat auditorium and seven small exhibition galleries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sculpture museum is arranged over two floors. The upper level contains a cafe, administration areas and an exhibition area, while the lower floor contains a multi-purpose gallery and a study room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marble is one of the dominant materials inside the new museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It provides flooring throughout and covers sections of the walls in the public areas. It also covers the main staircase, lending it a sculptural quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other visible materials in the two buildings include natural and white-painted wood, granite and white-painted plasterboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c1lvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura have been friends for decades and have collaborated on a number of projects. As well as their Serpentine Pavilion, they teamed up on a\u00a0pair of pavilions at the Venice Biennale in 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Siza was awarded the\u00a0Pritzker \u2013 architecture\u2019s most prestigious award<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 in 1992, for projects including the\u00a0Serralves Museum and Le\u00e7a Swimming Pools, both in Porto. In an\u00a0interview with Dezeen<\/a>, he said that emotion is an important factor in his design process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Souto de Moura won the same prize in 2011<\/a>, in recognition of works including the\u00a0Casa das Hist\u00f3rias Paula Rego in Cascais<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
