Manuel Rosa (Beja, 1953), graduated from the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes in 1978, belongs to the generation of artists responsible, in the 1980s, for the renewal of stone sculpture in Portugal. Throughout his career, Rosa has preferentially chosen limestone for his sculptures.
Initially connected to figuration, the artist’s works later became immediately recognizable by their absolute refinement, elliptical and conical forms, and decidedly modern execution processes, such as the use of the electric saw, the sectioning of various parts and their subsequent reassembly, and a rudimentary, almost schematic modeling of surfaces that removes any naturalistic intention.

In the two sculptures presented here, both from 1987, we recognize canoe models. Common to Manuel Rosa’s sculptures is the attention to the essential, the evocation of archetypes easily recognizable such as the human figure, the house, and the boat, seeking through them to reach the pure Platonic form.

This initiative is part of an exhibition program featuring works from the Serralves Collection specifically selected for the exhibition venues, with the aim of making the collection accessible to diverse audiences from all regions of the country.

Exhibition organized by the Serralves Foundation ― Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto.
