Rui Sanches – “Anunciação”

Rui Sanches

Rui Sanches has been developing, since the early 1980s, one of the most prominent bodies of work in the field of contemporary sculpture in Portugal. His work, firmly rooted in a deep understanding of art history, questions and reinvents the classical assumptions of sculpture by developing basic constructive principles and the continuous use and combination of wood and wood substitutes processed industrially with other materials such as iron, aluminum, mirror, plaster, and more.

In the present sculpture, wooden modules group together in a conversational area, suggesting a constant tension between the geometric and the organic, in a precarious and unsettling balance.
Rui Sanches (Lisbon, 1954) lives and works in Lisbon. His work is represented in various national and international collections, such as: the José de Azeredo Perdigão Modern Art Center, F.C.G., Lisbon; the Serralves Foundation, Porto; the Museum Van Hedendaagse Kunst, Antwerp; the Extremeño and Ibero-American Museum of Contemporary Art, Badajoz; the Contemporary Art Museum of Funchal – Forte de São Tiago; the Contemporary Art Museum of Elvas; the Ministry of Culture; the European Parliament (Portugal); the Luso-American Development Foundation, Lisbon; the Belém Cultural Center, Lisbon; among others.
